{"id":1040,"date":"2016-05-07T03:45:11","date_gmt":"2016-05-07T10:45:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/?p=1040"},"modified":"2016-05-06T21:53:45","modified_gmt":"2016-05-07T04:53:45","slug":"the-sounds-of-nature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/featured\/the-sounds-of-nature\/","title":{"rendered":"The Sounds of Nature"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2387\" src=\"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/waterfall-550.jpg\" alt=\"waterfall\" width=\"550\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/waterfall-550.jpg 550w, https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/waterfall-550-300x113.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'>&#8220;See how nature &#8211; trees, flowers, grass- grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence&#8230; We need silence to be able to touch souls.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2013 Mother Teresa \u2013<\/div><\/div><\/p>\n<p>While much of nature operates in silence, the wilderness exudes a multitude of sounds from the sweet songs of endless species of birds, to the coyote&#8217;s wail,\u00a0the elk&#8217;s bugle, the wind through the canopy of trees, the tumultuous crashing of a waterfall, the crack of thunder as lightning\u00a0splits the sky . . . \u00a0 These sounds, and many more, draw us deeply into the spell of nature and away from the noise and hubbub of today&#8217;s urban lifestyle. \u00a0It&#8217;s clear that the sounds of nature\u00a0help us recover from these stresses and science has proven it,<sup>1<\/sup>\u00a0yet in many places the sounds of nature are usurped by the sounds of people.<\/p>\n<h1>Noise in the National Parks<\/h1>\n<p>The National Park Service has been exploring sounds, and noise in particular, around the National Parks in the U.S. \u00a0They have found the following to be the most dominant noise sources the parks:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Vehicles &#8211; &#8220;Visitors find that many of the National Parks contain significant levels of sound and air pollution and traffic congestion similar to that found on the city streets they left behind.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Aircraft &#8211; &#8220;All forms of aviation activities over parks, including commercial passenger flights, park maintenance, scientific research, and fire and emergency operations, have increased in recent years.<sup>2<\/sup>&#8220;<\/li>\n<li>Snowmobiles and Off Highway Vehicles &#8211;\u00a0In a 2000 <a href=\"http:\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/YellowstoneNoise.html\">National Parks Conservation Association study<\/a>, the machines could be heard 90 percent of the time at eight popular sites in Yellowstone National Park.<\/li>\n<li>Park Operations &#8211;\u00a0construction, mowing, and aircraft use, as well as park infrastructure, such as heating and ventilation units<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Park Service has done many things to reduce noise at various National Parks. \u00a0Use of snowmobiles, for example, have been limited or banned in some parks. \u00a0Shuttle buses have been introduced to reduce auto traffic in key parts of some parks. \u00a0Air Tour operators are more tightly controlled at parks like Grand Canyon. \u00a0This all helps, but when people congregate at our National Parks, \u00a0there is always noise.
