{"id":106,"date":"2015-01-17T02:06:02","date_gmt":"2015-01-17T10:06:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/?p=106"},"modified":"2015-03-16T22:39:35","modified_gmt":"2015-03-17T05:39:35","slug":"10-survival-skills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/featured\/10-survival-skills\/","title":{"rendered":"10 Survival Skills"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The folks over at the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastonealive.com\/survival-skills\/\" target=\"_blank\">LastOneAlive<\/a> blog listed these ten survival skills:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>How to start a fire<\/li>\n<li>How to catch game with snares and traps<\/li>\n<li>How to clean game so you can cook and eat it<\/li>\n<li>How to forage for food<\/li>\n<li>How to find water<\/li>\n<li>How to build a shelter<\/li>\n<li>How to open a can without a can opener<\/li>\n<li>How to defend yourself with a knife<\/li>\n<li>How to navigate with just a compass and a map<\/li>\n<li>How to mend clothing<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>While these are listed with unprepared survival in mind (think getting dropped in the\u00a0woods a long way from anywhere without tools), they are also skills you should keep in mind when you are out backpacking.<\/p>\n<p>As a backpacker, \u00a0or any camper for that matter, \u00a0you will normally prepare for the needs that these skills provide.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ll have a camp stove of some sort, but it helps to also have the tools and knowledge you need to start wood on fire. \u00a0You&#8217;ll probably be taking dehydrated food to eat, but if you run out, \u00a0you may still need to eat vegetable matter or\u00a0trap and clean game for food. \u00a0Water is normally available if there are animals around, but you&#8217;ll have a way of purifying it for use. \u00a0You&#8217;ll have a tent and probably no food in cans. \u00a0You&#8217;ll have a knife, but should have better options than fighting a large animal with it. \u00a0You should also have a sewing kit of some sort to make mending easy.<\/p>\n<p>To me, navigating with a compass and map is the most critical skill &#8211; if you want to go somewhere in particular. \u00a0We can easily get enamored of our GPS equipment, but batteries die and equipment can be damaged. \u00a0Always take a paper (preferably waterproofed) map of the area you will be in, along with a good quality compass and know how to use them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-info'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><b>Reminder: Get free topographic maps of the USA at the <a href=\"https:\/\/store.usgs.gov\/b2c_usgs\/usgs\/maplocator\/(ctype=areaDetails&amp;xcm=r3standardpitrex_prd&amp;carea=%24ROOT&amp;layout=6_1_61_48&amp;uiarea=2)\/.do\">USGS Store<\/a>.<\/b><\/div><\/div>\n<p>What do you think of these as essential survival skills? \u00a0Do you have better list? \u00a0Provide your comments below or just reply if you are reading this in your email.<\/p>\n<p>Register for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/membership-account\/membership-checkout\/?level=1\">Discover Club<\/a>\u00a0(free) and elect to get these blog posts by email.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What survival skills do you consider to be the most critical?
