Nonetheless, this blog has a topic for &#8220;Survival&#8221;, so perhaps examining a few of theses deaths could be beneficial and\u00a0we can avoid some deadly mistakes.<\/p>\n<h1>Man Struck by Lightning<\/h1>\n<p>On September 13, a 21-year-old man died\u00a0after being struck by lightning near \u00a0Ooo-Aah Point about a mile down the South Kaibab Trail at\u00a0Grand Canyon National Park. \u00a0This trail is carved into the side of the canyon and fully exposed to the elements. \u00a0There is really no way to avoid lightning there other than to get up and out of the canyon if a thunderstorm threatens.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Lesson number 1<\/strong>: be aware of the weather and find cover before a thunderstorm arrives.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lesson number 2<\/strong>: read my story on <a href=\"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/featured\/lightning-safety\/\">Lightning Safety<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1>Grizzly Kills Hiker<\/h1>\n<p>A 63-year-old man was attacked and killed by a grizzly bear near the Elephant Back Loop Trail\u00a0in Yellowstone National Park on August 6. \u00a0Reports indicate the bear was not defending her cubs, but was aggressively hunting for food.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Lesson number 1<\/strong>, carry and be prepared to use bear spray when in bear country.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lesson number 2<\/strong>, read my post &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/featured\/nine-tips-for-surviving-in-bear-country\/\">Nine Tips for Surviving in Bear Country<\/a>.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1 class=\"TEXT_w_Indent\">Man Dies Climbing Longs Peak<\/h1>\n<div id=\"attachment_1274\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1274\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1274\" src=\"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Longspeak.jpg\" alt=\"Longs Peak\" width=\"225\" height=\"146\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1274\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Longs Peak<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"TEXT_w_Indent\">On October 2, a 26 year old man died in Rocky Mountain National Park. \u00a0He planned to hike alone to the summit of Longs Peak (14,259 feet) and was found at the bottom of\u00a0Lamb&#8217;s Slide. \u00a0His planned route was unknown, but he was reported missing when he did not return when he was expected. \u00a0Apparently he slipped and fell. \u00a0Search teams reported icy conditions in spots.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"TEXT_w_Indent\"><strong>Lesson number 1<\/strong>, don&#8217;t explore alone, particularly in remote areas where you are likely to be far from anyone that might be able to help.<\/li>\n<li class=\"TEXT_w_Indent\"><strong>Lesson number 2<\/strong>, have appropriate footwear for the conditions you expect. \u00a0If conditions are different or change along the way, \u00a0be willing to wait until conditions improve or turn back immediately.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1 class=\"TEXT_w_Indent\">Seven Die in Keyhole Canyon<\/h1>\n<div id=\"attachment_1272\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1272\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1272\" src=\"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/keyholecanyon.jpg\" alt=\"Keyhole Canyon\" width=\"225\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/keyholecanyon.jpg 225w, https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/keyholecanyon-201x300.jpg 201w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1272\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Keyhole Canyon<br \/>National Park Service Photo<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"TEXT_w_Indent\">On September 14, seven people died in Keyhole Canyon in Zion National Park. \u00a0Some of them\u00a0had a lot of\u00a0hiking experience\u00a0and all except one of them\u00a0took a five-hour canyoneering class offered by the Zion Adventure Company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"TEXT_w_Indent\">Just before heading to\u00a0the canyon the weather service had predicted a 40% chance of rain with heavy thunderstorms and a moderate risk of flash flooding. \u00a0Just after starting their adventure, the weather service raised the chance of rain to 50%. \u00a0Part rangers began advising people to stay out of the canyons, but our group didn&#8217;t get that message. \u00a0They did check the weather at 1:00 PM, but the\u00a0weather didn&#8217;t seem threatening,\u00a0so they set off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"TEXT_w_Indent\">\u00a0About 20 minutes after they lost cell phone coverage on their way to the canyon,\u00a0the weather service became concerned and issued a flash flood warning for the area. Forecasters said: &#8220;Move to higher ground now. \u00a0Act quickly to save your life.&#8221; \u00a0They made it safely into the canyon wearing wetsuits, waterproof shoes, helmets \u00a0and their backpacks using their only rope. \u00a0Then a flash flood rushed through the canyon, killing them all. \u00a0It took a day to find the first body and two more days to find the last.<\/p>\n<p class=\"TEXT_w_Indent\">Here&#8217;s the thing, \u00a0Keyhole Canyon is considered an easy canyoneering experience, but it is not a &#8216;hike&#8217; in the normal sense of the word. \u00a0It requires\u00a0the ability to rig and use ropes and, in an emergency, it requires the ability to apply those skills quickly. \u00a0These people were experienced hikers, but not experienced canyoneers, and that may have ultimately caused their demise.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"TEXT_w_Indent\"><strong>Lesson number 1<\/strong>, \u00a0have the skills necessary and be able to apply them quickly and efficiently.<\/li>\n<li class=\"TEXT_w_Indent\"><strong>Lesson number 2<\/strong>, \u00a0have some way to check the weather immediately before entering a situation like this. \u00a0A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avantlink.com\/click.php?tt=cl&amp;mi=10248&amp;pw=181465&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.rei.com%2Fproduct%2F860468%2Fspot-global-phone\" target=\"_blank\">satellite phone<\/a>\u00a0can replace your cell phone in the wilderness where no cell service is available and some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avantlink.com\/click.php?tt=cl&amp;mi=10248&amp;pw=181465&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.rei.com%2Fproduct%2F825518%2Fgarmin-rino-650-gps2-way-radio\" target=\"_blank\">GPS units have a weather radio<\/a>\u00a0built in. \u00a0Having said that, \u00a0many people have long and healthy outdoor careers without ever owning such a device. \u00a0In this case a more experienced group of canyoneers entered Keyhole Canyon after our group, passed them in the canyon and lived to tell about it. \u00a0Thus, \u00a0I suspect inexperience played a larger role in this case.<\/li>\n<li class=\"TEXT_w_Indent\"><strong>Lesson number 3<\/strong>, \u00a0when setting off on a new type of adventure that requires special skills, hire a professional guide service. \u00a0Zion National Park doesn&#8217;t allow guide services, but other parks do. \u00a0Not only can a guide service help you improve your skills, the guide\u00a0may also save your life in an emergency. \u00a0Our group did the next best thing and got five hours of professional training before setting out &#8211; it just wasn&#8217;t enough.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1>Teenagers Crushed by Branch<\/h1>\n<p>On August 14, at 4:15 AM, two teenage boys were crushed to death by a falling tree limb while sleeping in their tent at Yosemite National Park.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Lesson number 1<\/strong>, if you are camping under trees, be sure to look above for dead limbs that could fall. \u00a0It&#8217;s often difficult to be certain of the hazard, but if you check, you stand a chance of locating your tent in a safer place.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1>Conclusion<\/h1>\n<p>These are only a few of the deaths in the National Parks this summer. \u00a0Besides deaths, like heart attacks and suicides that could have happened anywhere, most deaths are associated with risky ventures like mountain climbing and canyoneering. \u00a0Many of the reports of people dying in the National Parks provided insufficient information to uncover the ultimate causes of those deaths or to develop lessons from them. \u00a0The bottom line is to be prepared for your adventure and the conditions surrounding it before you start out, then think safety at every point in the journey.<\/p>\n<h1>Please Share<\/h1>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A lot of people died this summer in the National Parks of the U.S. I didn&#8217;t highlight these deaths in the weekly Outdoor News simply because I didn&#8217;t want to discourage anyone from exploring the outdoors in the National Parks or anywhere else.
