{"id":1921,"date":"2016-01-18T02:47:19","date_gmt":"2016-01-18T10:47:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/?p=1921"},"modified":"2016-01-15T19:15:35","modified_gmt":"2016-01-16T03:15:35","slug":"heinz-stucke-the-man-on-the-bicycle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/motivation\/heinz-stucke-the-man-on-the-bicycle\/","title":{"rendered":"Heinz St\u00fccke: The Man on the Bicycle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Those of us that enjoy bicycling typically have a regimen that involves a loop ride outside our door\u00a0or\u00a0a mountain adventure for an afternoon or a day. \u00a0 Some of us even get into\u00a0cross country adventures and other long distance tours. \u00a0Not\u00a0Heinz St\u00fccke. \u00a0At age 22 the tool maker\u00a0from H\u00f6velhof, Germany, decided that he would rather see the world than\u00a0work in a factory and off he\u00a0went. \u00a0He never returned. \u00a0Forty-eight years later he had visited 257 countries and traveled 368,861 miles.<\/p>\n<p>What it boiled down to for\u00a0St\u00fccke was that:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>He didn&#8217;t enjoy his work,<\/li>\n<li>He wanted to travel and<\/li>\n<li>Traveling by bicycle was inexpensive.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>He later learned that bicycling became a passport to connect with and build good will with the people he met. \u00a0That was important to him because once he developed that good will, people would help him. \u00a0With no money in his pocket, he depended upon that help. \u00a0As a result he no longer needed to go back to the factory.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Man who wanted to see it all\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hahBdQlPCfI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h1>St\u00fccke&#8217;s\u00a0Bicycles<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Brompton.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1924\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1924\" src=\"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/BromptonSML.jpg\" alt=\"Brompton Bicycle\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/BromptonSML.jpg 225w, https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/BromptonSML-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/BromptonSML-62x62.jpg 62w, https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/BromptonSML-184x184.jpg 184w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>He didn&#8217;t spend much money on bicycles either. \u00a0His first bicycle was given to him by the German manufacturer. \u00a0The\u00a055 pound three-speed with 25 inch tires (pictured below) was specially reinforced to hold up under the worst conditions imaginable without much maintenance. \u00a0It was certainly not the kind of bicycle most of us would enjoy riding. \u00a0Further, \u00a0he typically carried around 110 pounds of baggage &#8211; whew! \u00a0Nonetheless, \u00a0he used the same bike to travel the world for 44 years.<\/p>\n<p>St\u00fccke would have continued to use the same bicycle, except that his journeys often required airplane and boat travel and around 2004 these carriers began to charge outlandish fees to transport his large bicycle. \u00a0For the next five years he used a\u00a07-Speed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikefriday.com\/bicycles\/llama\" target=\"_blank\">Pocket Lama<\/a> folding bike. \u00a0These bikes fold up so that they can fit inside a regular piece of luggage.<\/p>\n<p>In 2006, English bicycle manufacturer\u00a0Brompton gave him a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brompton.com\/Buy\/Help-me-choose\/Recommended\/566289\" target=\"_blank\">M6R six-speed folding bicycle<\/a>\u00a0(pictured).\u00a0 Brompton offers so many options that their bikes are almost custom made. St\u00fccke got one that works for him and he has been riding it ever since.<\/p>\n<h1>Paying His Way<\/h1>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_1925\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/HeinzStueckeParis.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1925\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1925\" class=\"wp-image-1925 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/HeinzStueckeParis-225.jpg\" alt=\"Heinz Stuecke\" width=\"225\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1925\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Heinz Stuecke on the place de la Sorbonne in Paris, France. 1999.<br \/> By Anthony Atkielski (Agateller) [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gnu.org\/copyleft\/fdl.html\">GFDL<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/3.0\/\">CC-BY-SA-3.0<\/a>], <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File%3AHeinzStueckeParis.jpg\">via Wikimedia Commons<\/a><\/p><\/div>While\u00a0St\u00fccke is all for living frugally, \u00a0he still needs some income. \u00a0He is currently sponsored by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brompton.com\" target=\"_blank\">Brompton<\/a>, \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bike-tech.com\" target=\"_blank\">Bike Tech<\/a>\u00a0(a Brompton dealer) and <a href=\"https:\/\/picturae.com\/uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Picturae<\/a>. \u00a0Over the years he has financed his lifestyle with\u00a0licensing revenue from his photos and\u00a0donations, plus sales of his\u00a0travel writing,\u00a0postcards, and booklets. \u00a0Now, working with a team of writers and designers, \u00a0he has assembled some of his best photography into a book titled:\u00a0<span id=\"productTitle\" class=\"a-size-large\"><em>Home is Elsewhere: Heinz Stucke: 50 Years Around the World by Bike<\/em>. \u00a0The book is a little hard to find unless you are in Europe where it is available from <a href=\"https:\/\/bromptonjunction.com\/shop\/home-is-elsewhere-heinz-stucke-50-years-around-the-world-by-bike-book\/\" target=\"_blank\">Brompton<\/a>. \u00a0It should be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/099345240X\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=099345240X&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=themushroomgrowe&amp;linkId=6VKWXBZSZTNAGFCP\" rel=\"nofollow\">available in the U.S.<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"https:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=themushroomgrowe&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=099345240X\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>\u00a0<\/span>eventually.<\/p>\n<p>His book addresses many of his\u00a0adventures like having his bicycles stolen, being shot by rebels, being beaten\u00a0by soldiers, being attacked by bees and more importantly meeting wonderful people all over the world.<\/p>\n<h1>Still Moving<\/h1>\n<p>At age 76,\u00a0St\u00fccke isn&#8217;t done traveling yet. \u00a0He wants a place in the\u00a0Guinness Book of World Records. \u00a0From 1995 through 1999, he was listed as having travelled more widely by bicycle than anyone in history. \u00a0Now Guiness is requiring him to bicycle in even more parts of the world and he&#8217;s taken on the challenge.
