{"id":259,"date":"2015-04-01T00:37:21","date_gmt":"2015-04-01T07:37:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/?p=259"},"modified":"2015-04-01T14:26:18","modified_gmt":"2015-04-01T21:26:18","slug":"extreme-ironing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/featured\/extreme-ironing\/","title":{"rendered":"Extreme Ironing"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_260\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Extermeironingrivelin225.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-260\" class=\"wp-image-260 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Extermeironingrivelin225.jpg\" alt=\"Extreme Ironing\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-260\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Extreme Ironimg on Rivelin Needle<br \/> Sheffield, United Kingdom<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Extreme Ironing (EI) is an outdoor\u00a0sport that adds the complication of ironing clothing to the outdoor activities many of us already enjoy. \u00a0EI affectionados have combined their laundry efforts with hiking, <a href=\"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/places\/easy-caving-in-the-lava-beds\/\" target=\"_blank\">caving<\/a>, rock climbing, <a href=\"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/featured\/bouldering\/\" target=\"_blank\">bouldering<\/a>, scuba and free diving, surfing, wake boarding, hang gliding, bungee jumping and more.<\/p>\n<p>The sport was started by Phil Shaw in England in 1997.\u00a0 Shaw needed to iron some clothes but wanted to go outside. \u00a0He decided to combine the two activities and the sport was born. \u00a0Since then the sport has spread around the world with hot spots in Germany, Britain, South Africa and, most recently, the Hudson Valley in New York.<\/p>\n<p>As with most sports, EI quickly became competitive. \u00a0In\u00a02002 the First Extreme Ironing World Championship took place near Munich, Germany. \u00a0The competition involved five sections:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Urban<\/b>&#8211; ironing in\/on\/around a broken down car.<\/li>\n<li><b>Water<\/b>&#8211; A fast flowing river was the location for this station. Competitors could use surfboards, canoes or rubber rings to help them.<\/li>\n<li><b>Forest<\/b>&#8211; Ironing at the top of a tree.<\/li>\n<li><b>Rocky<\/b>&#8211; A purpose built climbing wall, which ironists had to climb and iron a t-shirt.<\/li>\n<li><b>Freestyle\u00a0<\/b>&#8211; The section where &#8220;anything goes&#8221;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Three teams from Britain plus teams from Austria, Australia, Chile, Croatia and Germany competed. \u00a0The British dominated the team competition while German and Austrian competitors picked up the individual prizes.<\/p>\n<p>A similar sport, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Extreme_Cello\" target=\"_blank\">Extreme Cello<\/a>, attracts those more interested in music than ironing.<\/p>\n<p>Be sure to like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ExtremeIroningOfficial\" target=\"_blank\">Extreme Ironing Official Facebook page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h1>Share This Post<\/h1>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Extreme Ironing (EI) is an outdoor\u00a0sport that adds the complication of ironing clothing to the outdoor activities many of us already enjoy. \u00a0EI affectionados have combined their laundry efforts with hiking, caving, rock climbing, bouldering, scuba and free diving, surfing, wake boarding, hang gliding, bungee jumping and more.
