If you live in the desert southwest of the U.S., now is the time to be looking; a super-bloom is underway. Reports from the last week or so say that the desert is green from Phoenix, Arizona, to Palm Springs, California, and most other areas in the vicinity as well. Highlights include Ford Dry Lake (west of Mesa Verde and north of I-10), Diamond Lake Valley on the Flower Trail, San Jacinto (33°48’36.9″N 116°56’51.3″W), Santa Rosa Plateau and many other locales.

The Press Enterprise reports that flower enthusiasts caused traffic to back up on I-15 in Lake Elsinore, California, last Sunday. The countryside there is covered in California poppies. California Highway Patrol Officer Mike Lassig told the newspaper. “The highway patrol would like to remind people that they can’t stop on the freeway or on the shoulders or median. We ask people not to stop by the side of the freeway to take photos or get out of their vehicles to look at anything out there like these people were doing to look at the flowers.”

You can find lots of photos at www.desertusa.com/wildflo/ca.html.

The wildflower super-bloom got many people and their video cameras outdoors in the last week. This video, by John Locke, captures flowers in the hills around Elsinore, California, from a drone. He covers more territory in five minutes than you could walk through in a day.
