\nSafely sheltered from the shower,
\nWe may count the colours o’er.-
\nSeven there are, there are no more;
\nEach in each so finely blended,
\nWhere they begin, or where are ended,
\nThe finest eye can scarcely see.
\nA fixed thing it seems to be;
\nBut, while we speak, see how it glides
\nAway, and now observe it hides
\nHalf of its perfect arch-now we
\nScarce any part of it can see.
\nWhat is colour? If I were
\nA natural philosopher,
\nI would tell you what does make
\nThis meteor every colour take:
\nBut an unlearned eye may view

\nWhenever I a rainbow see,
\nEach precious tint is dear to me;
\nFor every colour find I there,
\nWhich flowers, which fields, which ladies wear:
\nMy favourite green, the grass’s hue,
\nAnd the fine deep violet-blue,
\nAnd the pretty pale blue-bell,
\nAnd the rose I love so well,
\nAll the wondrous variations
\nOf the tulips, pinks, carnations,
\nThis woodbine here both flower and leaf.
\n‘Tis a truth that’s past belief,
\nThat every flower and every tree,
\nAnd every living thing we see,
\nEvery face which we espy,
\nEvery cheek and every eye,
\nIn all their tints, in every shade,
\nAre from the rainbow’s colours made.<\/p>\n
