{"id":3128,"date":"2018-10-12T21:35:38","date_gmt":"2018-10-13T04:35:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/?p=3128"},"modified":"2018-10-12T21:36:25","modified_gmt":"2018-10-13T04:36:25","slug":"a-1491-world-map","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/featured\/a-1491-world-map\/","title":{"rendered":"A 1491 World Map"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>These days there are flat earthers who profess the belief that the world is flat. \u00a0There is also the notion that at the time Columbus sailed the Atlantic in 1492, the common belief was also that the world was flat. \u00a0Nothing could be farther from the truth as evidenced by a map created\u00a0German cartographer Henricus Martellus (aka Heinrich Hammer) in 1491. \u00a0The map depicts the world as known to Europeans at that time, but adds some things. \u00a0While the America&#8217;s aren&#8217;t displayed, the void of the Pacific Ocean is filled with small imagined islands.<\/p>\n<p>Partly based upon this and earlier maps, Columbus sailed west, expecting to reach Japan, to the east of his starting point. \u00a0He was also well aware of the curvature of the earth that he could easily observe whenever he set sail. \u00a0Columbus knew the earth was generally spherical.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Martellus-world-map.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3131\" src=\"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Martellus-world-map550.jpg\" alt=\"Martellus World Map\" width=\"550\" height=\"313\" srcset=\"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Martellus-world-map550.jpg 550w, https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Martellus-world-map550-300x171.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A copy of the map still exists at the Beinecke Library at Yale University. \u00a0It was covered with notations, but most were so faint that they were unreadable. \u00a0A few years ago researchers using multispectral imaging were able to make those notes readable. \u00a0The were written in Latin. \u00a0Here are a few of them, translated to English:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MapTextExample.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3133\" src=\"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MapTextExample-194x300.png\" alt=\"Martellus Map Text Example\" width=\"194\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MapTextExample-194x300.png 194w, https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MapTextExample.png 627w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 194px) 100vw, 194px\" \/><\/a>In the Indian Ocean: &#8220;a sea monster that is like the sun when it shines, whose form can hardly be described, except that its skin is soft and its body huge&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In Northern Africa: &#8220;Here there are large wildernesses in which there are lions, large leopards, and many other animals different from ours.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In Central Asia: &#8220;Here are found the Hippopodes: they have a human form but the feet of horses.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In Asia: &#8220;monsters similar to humans whose ears are so large that they can cover their whole body&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Some notations are based upon contemporary experience while some relied upon more ancient texts, in some cases fiction.<\/p>\n<p>A note in the margin provides some context for the map: &#8220;Although Strabo and Ptolemy and the majority of the ancients were most assiduous in describing the world we, however, bring together in this picture and carefully show in their true places the new knowledge that escaped their diligence and remained unknown to them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>You can learn more about this map and its relationship to earlier maps in <a href=\"https:\/\/digital.kenyon.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?referer=https:\/\/www.google.com\/&amp;httpsredir=1&amp;article=1058&amp;context=perejournal\">this article from Kenyon College&#8217;s <em>Peregrinations<\/em>.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A map created\u00a0German cartographer Henricus Martellus (aka Heinrich Hammer) in 1491 depicts the world as known to Europeans at that time.
