{"id":675,"date":"2015-06-02T01:13:13","date_gmt":"2015-06-02T08:13:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/?p=675"},"modified":"2015-05-19T22:14:34","modified_gmt":"2015-05-20T05:14:34","slug":"geocaching-worse-than-horse-apples","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/featured\/geocaching-worse-than-horse-apples\/","title":{"rendered":"Geocaching Worse Than Horse Apples"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-676\" src=\"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Geocoin550.jpg\" alt=\"Geocoin\" width=\"549\" height=\"411\" srcset=\"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Geocoin550.jpg 549w, https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Geocoin550-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 549px) 100vw, 549px\" \/><\/p>\n<h1>Geocaching Banned<\/h1>\n<p>The Arizona State Trust Land Department takes a dim view of <a href=\"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/ideas\/geocaching-background\/\" target=\"_blank\">geocaching<\/a>, banning the activity on the lands they manage. <em>Arizona Sonora News<\/em> recently quoted Bill Boyd a policy administrator for the trust as saying:\u00a0\u201cBy policy, one of the things you can\u2019t do is leave things on trust land and by its very nature, geocaching does that. \u00a0The purpose of state trust land is to generate revenue, not for recreation.\u201d \u00a0Apparently the Trust, or at least Boyd, fails to recognize the economic value of recreation or even that\u00a0they charge fees for people to recreate on the land they manage. \u00a0It would seem recreation is indeed a purpose of these lands.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_680\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-680\" class=\"size-full wp-image-680\" src=\"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/windmills225.jpg\" alt=\"windmills\" width=\"225\" height=\"189\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-680\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Windmills Someone Left on Trust Lands<br \/>Photo from Arizona State Land Department Annual Report 2012-2013<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Arizona has around 30,000 geocaches and a fair number are\u00a0on these lands that total about 12% of the state&#8217;s entire land base. \u00a0 \u00a0The land has fences, stock tanks, windmills, solar power plants, and many other appurtenances that could be considered refuse under this interpretation &#8211; but are not. \u00a0 Likewise equestrians and cattle are allowed to use the land without removing the manure that most would consider refuse. \u00a0All in all, the stance on geocaching is pretty odd.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately over 42% of Arizona&#8217;s land base is managed by the Federal government. \u00a0 Federal agencies like the Forest Service and BLM take\u00a0a much more enlightened view of geocaching.<\/p>\n<p>If you enjoy geocaching in Arizona, \u00a0you might want to contact\u00a0the governor and the state land department and ask them to reconsider their position.<\/p>\n<p>Arizona State Land Department<br \/>\n1616 W.
