saying: &#8220;Broadly, a commitment device is an\u00a0arrangement entered into by an individual with the aim of helping fulfill a plan\u00a0for future behavior that would otherwise be difficult due to intra-personal conflict.&#8221; American \u00a0journalist Stephen Dubner and economist\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-style-span\">\u00a0Steven Levitt\u00a0of \u00a0the University of Chicago define it as\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">&#8220;a means with which to lock yourself into a course of action that you might not otherwise choose but that produces a desired result.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A commitment device might be arranged for you, for example a\u00a0general could\u00a0drop the troops on a beach then remove the landing craft. \u00a0If you happen to be a trooper, you are suddenly committed to fight or die. \u00a0Often commitment devices are arranged between individuals. \u00a0For example, \u00a0you could announce your\u00a0plan to your\u00a0friends with the notion that having these eyes on you would motivate you to follow through. \u00a0Sometimes a commitment device can be completely personal, like establishing a goal associated with a reward. \u00a0Here are some examples of commitment devices that could help you get outdoors more:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fashion Scientist Yarina Valverde established a <a href=\"https:\/\/fashionhedge.com\/2014\/11\/25\/30-day-hiking-challenge\/\">30 day hiking challenge<\/a> for herself and enjoyed it so much she extended it.<\/li>\n<li>I participated in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oncampuschallenge.org\/users\/132645\">Outdoor Nation&#8217;s Campus Challenge<\/a> and finished 24th out of 7,359 participants. \u00a0In \u00a0similar programs,Vermont State Parks offered an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vtstateparks.com\/VENTUREVERMONT\/\">outdoor challenge<\/a>\u00a0and Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation offered the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegpoc.org\/\">Great Pennsylvania Outdoor Challenge<\/a> this year.<\/li>\n<li>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pinterest.com\/allonsy44\/monthly-fitness-challenges\/\">challenge calendar<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0helps some people succeed by checking off daily progress<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you are having trouble committing to outdoor activities, you might see if you can come up with a commitment \u00a0device that works for you.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gharad Bryan, Dean Karlan and Scott Nelson of Yale University explored the notion of the &#8216;committment device&#8217;
