{"id":97,"date":"2015-01-15T03:00:38","date_gmt":"2015-01-15T11:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/?p=97"},"modified":"2015-03-16T22:40:00","modified_gmt":"2015-03-17T05:40:00","slug":"the-developing-fear-of-nature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/theblog\/featured\/the-developing-fear-of-nature\/","title":{"rendered":"The Developing Fear of Nature"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>The Developing Fear of Nature<\/h1>\n<p>Ever watch the Discovery Channel&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discovery.com\/tv-shows\/shark-week\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Shark Week<\/em><\/a>\u00a0on TV? \u00a0How about Animal Planet&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvguide.com\/tvshows\/natures-deadliest\/videos\/299131\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Nature&#8217;s Deadliest<\/em><\/a> or \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discovery.com\/tv-shows\/shark-week\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Rattlesnake Republic<\/em><\/a>? \u00a0Do these shows instill a love of nature and a desire to get outdoors? \u00a0Quite the opposite. \u00a0Imagine what they are doing to your kids! \u00a0While these shows sort of reflect reality &#8211; in that the animal actors are just doing their thing, often with encouragement from the producers &#8211; the truth of the situation is quite different.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0better dose of reality:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The chances of dying from a snakebite in the U.S. is nearly zero and fewer than one in 37,500 people are bitten by venomous snakes in the U.S. each year. <a href=\"https:\/\/ufwildlife.ifas.ufl.edu\/venomous_snake_faqs.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation &#8211; University of Florida<\/a><\/li>\n<li>In the U.S. your chances of getting killed by a lightening strike are 30 times greater than dying of a shark attack. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.factmonster.com\/spot\/sharks1.html\" target=\"_blank\">Fact Monster<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Deaths from black widow spider bites are virtually non-existent and, despite occasional news reports, there are no brown recluse spiders living in California. \u00a0 In areas where brown recluse spiders do live, \u00a0bites are rare. \u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/spiders.ucr.edu\/myth.html\" target=\"_blank\">University of California Riverside &#8211; Spider Research<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Alligators seldom bite people, and fatalities from such occurrences are extremely rare. <a href=\"https:\/\/myfwc.com\/media\/310176\/Alligator_BiteFacts.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I could go on, but the point is that the horrors displayed on television, in an attempt to draw viewers, are hugely overblown and a detriment to the health of everyone that watches them and then fears going outdoors. \u00a0Try turning off the television and going for a walk &#8211; take your kids along.<\/p>\n<p>Register for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/explore.globalcreations.com\/membership-account\/membership-checkout\/?level=1\">Discover Club<\/a>\u00a0(free) and elect to get these blog posts by email.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ever watch the Discovery Channel&#8217;s Shark Week on TV?
